Abstract

L'attività di riforma della Chiesa di Paolo IV non è stato affatto uno dei temi privilegiati della storiografia occupatasi del suo papato. Nella sua imponente opera sul concilio di Trento, H. Jedin dedica solo una decina di pagine al papato di Paolo IV, limitandosi a considerazioni generiche e senza utilizzare fonti di prima mano ; d'altronde l'interesse di questo illustre studioso non poteva concentrarsi su di un papa che non volle assolutamente riaprire il concilio e la cui attività di riforma egli considerava evidentemente poco rilevante. I dispacci dell'ambasciatore veneziano Navagero, sfruttati sistematicamente, offrono l'immagine di un Paolo IV fortemente impegnato sul terreno della riforma della Chiesa. La sua fu in realtà un'attività di riforma assai importante, che anticipò il "centralismo romano" dell'epoca post-tridentina.
